Puglia’s Regional Council has approved spending 250,000 euros to restore sand to beaches in the Province of Lecce that were badly eroded by recent heavy seas. According to La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno (
www.lagazzettadelmezzogiorno.it), provincial government and business officials, local mayors and seaside tourism entrepreneurs called for the measure to avert economic damage to Salentine Peninsula beaches during the upcoming tourism season.
The province’s beaches and seaside resorts along the Adriatic and Ionian seas are hugely popular vacation destinations each summer, attracting tourists from around the world. Any threats to the economic success of that highly seasonal business must be taken seriously, as the region’s government has shown by taking this action.
