The Vatican confirms that Pope Benedict XVI will visit San Giovanni Rotondo, the shrine to Saint Pio, on June 21, 2009. The schedule calls for the Pontiff to arrive in the town on the Gargano Peninsula that morning by helicopter and travel by “Popemobile” to the crypt of Saint Pio. Then, he will celebrate Mass at 10:15 A.M. at Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the afternoon, the Pope will visit the hospital at the shrine, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (House for the Relief of Suffering), and the Chiesa di San Pio da Pietrelcina before returning to the Vatican.
